GBM's at Mashpee Open Water Swim, Saturday June 20 2009

Five Great Bay Masters swam the Mashpee Super Swim at John's Pond. Swimmers navigate a triangular course that's a half mile around and can race either a half mile, mile, or 3.1 miles. It was a sunny day with pleasant air temperature and minimal wind, so the water was placid. Due to an abnormally cool and rainy month of June the water temperature was likely the coldest its ever been for this race, somewhere around 68F. Race attendance was light, possibly because people anticipated the cool conditions.

GBM's residing in the Seacoast area can make the commute the morning of the event - its about a 2 hour 15 minute drive, and race day registration is allowed. Swimmers get a free T-shirt and a free lunch afterward. John's pond offers the nicest fresh water swimming conditions possible - clean water, sandy bottom, minimal vegetation. After the race there's lots to do down the Cape, including ocean beaches, surfing and sailboarding. This is a fun event - put it on your calendar for next year.

Full race results are available.
