2013 GBM Open Water Swim Season Recap (posted 9/2/2013)

As we begin the month of September the open water swim season in New England is winding down. Great Bay Masters has had an active season, with regular training sessions at Wallis Sands Beach at 5:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and at Jenness beach at 8 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Among the events GBM's competed in this summer:

Charles River One Mile swim, June 1: Guy swam an impressive 2nd place overall.

Mashpee 'Super Swim' June 23, 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 3.1 mile. Congratulations to Gail and Kyle for swimming the 3.1 mile event. Mashpee is one of the nicest fresh water events, great location on the Cape, clean water, lots of fun.

Peaks to Portland July 13, 2.4 mile swim from Peaks Island to East End Beach in Porltand; complete results here. GBM was well represented by Guy (4th overall), Kirsten (1st overall female), Barry F. and Judy G-G.

The highlight / focal point of the GBM open water season has become the Nubble Light Challenge, a 2.4 mile ocean swim starting at Long Sands Beach (York ME), passing through the Nubble 'gut', and finishing at Short Sands Beach. Held July 20 this summer it was the 4th annual - and conditions have varied from downright challenging (fog, waves, cold) to optimal - glassy ocean and moderate water temperature. This year conditions were good - small waves, sunny, and water a bit cool. Complete results available here. Congratulations to all GBM's who swam (results in parenthesis, overall / age group):

(3/1) Guy Davis
(9/3) Edmund Gendreau
(13/1) Kirsten Read

Special kudos to Kirsten Read, the first female finisher overall, and Susan Knight, the first female no-wetsuit.

August 17th, the 35th Gloucester Clean Harbor Swim, 1.2 miles, hosted by the YNS Sharks. GBM represented by Guy and Ed, placing 3rd and 4th overall, complete results here. This is a great event, not far from the New Hampshire seacoast, nice sandy beach, sheltered harbor. Highly recommended to GBM's for next summer.

8th Annual Swim & Fin, Salem Harbor Open Water Swim, August 24. GBM represented by Kirsten R. and Genvieve B. in the 5K, complete results here.

The Mighty Merrimack Swim, 1 mile and 2 mile, September 1. DJ J. representing GBM in the 2-mile event, 6th overall in the wetsuit category. Results here.

Upcoming we have the 'In Search of Memphre' 25 mile swim, Lake Memphremagog, Newport, VT - GBM to be represented by our most rugged, sans-wetsuit swimmer, Bob F.

And for the those GBM's willing travel for a warm water open water swim adventures, there are two swims on the same day, October 13, that have piqued the interested of a few of us:
