Meet our Coaches:

Headshot of Coach Todd Whitford

Todd Whitford (UNH Workouts)

After spending a vast amount of his childhood and teen years in local and regional pools for local teams (Oyster River Otters, Portsmouth Aquatic Club, Seacoast Swimming Association), Todd took a 20 year hiatus to start a career and a family. He rediscovered his love of swimming in 2013 after a conversation with a friend, and started coaching 2 years later.

Todd’s goal is to help others discover (or rediscover) a love for the sport, improve their confidence and ability in the water, and to have as much fun as possible.

Brendan Sullivan (Portsmouth Workouts)

Brendan is the Great Bay Masters – Portsmouth Swim Coach. He lives in Portsmouth with his dog, Lucy. Brendan is originally from Holyoke, MA–the birthplace of volleyball. Brendan swam competitively for over 20 years and is a graduate of Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. He has 5+ years of experience coaching swimmers from ages 4 – 80. He is a teacher at Portsmouth High School, teaching English as a Second Language and Spanish. When he is not working, Brendan is walking Lucy, cooking, playing tennis, or spending time with friends and family.

Steve Smith (Dover Workouts)

Steve started swimming shortly after he began walking, in his local YMCA pool. He continued first as an age grouper and then in high school and college. After a brief 30 year break while beginning his career and raising a family he started swimming with GBM. He is an active triathlete having competed at many levels including Ironman Hawaii.

Before retiring as a Guidance Counselor from Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood he coached soccer, basketball and baseball. Prior to COVID he coached with SSA. He has a person-centered approach and hopes to assist swimmers improve from where they are to where they want to be.
